I have been hit by three awful infections in 2 weeks. Likely, the second and third were residual from the first. I have not been very clear headed, which explains my blogging absence. That, and the fact that I had to get 4 kids ready to head back to school. But they are off, and I am on the mend.
I always smile when someone asks,
"How are you?"
I reply, that I am not so great at the moment which more often than not leads to...
"Oh, you should see a doctor."
Then I always say, "that's okay, I have my lamp full of oil." And for the last two weeks, I have needed it!
The truth is, there are so many home remedies out there that will do. I do not need to rush to a doctor every time someone sniffles. If I cut my finger off while cleaning my immersion blender, sure. If a kid breaks his arm, absolutely. But some things, I would rather stay home and take care of myself. We live in a society that has taught us that if you want to feel better, you must see a doctor. In fact we walk in and demand that he fix us. When did we get so dependent on others to do for us what we can do for ourselves?
What if there comes a time when you can't see a doctor? Such as financially it is not feasible or you become allergic to the color white, or the apocalypse happens or whatever. There are so many areas of our lives where we need to be self sufficient. I think the best time to learn how to treat myself for strep is when sick care is bounteous enough that if I am a total failure, I can run to the doctor. I would prefer to learn this skill now then someday when it is the only option I have.
I am not a doctor. I am a mom and a lady on a mission to be able to take care of my family. But this is what worked for me the past few weeks. Hey look, it's a prescription you can read!
Common Cold: Lots of water! Lots of vitamin C. Several times per day applying OnGuard to bottoms of feet or gargling for a sore throat. Carry a bottle of eucalyptus, breathe or peppermint everywhere, put a drop in the palms, cover the nose and just breathe. I found that breathe right strips are also very helpful at night. In three days, my cold was gone, no OTC medicine. But a few days later...
Sinus infection....oh joy! I continued as I did with the cold, but this time, things got fun. Enter the Netti Pot! Water, a bit of salt, 1 drop each of rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus. Ah, that feels good. I did this 2-3 times a day. Peppermint and Breathe on the forehead for the constant sinus headache. Oregano and lemon in a capsule for the infection three times a day. I sounded terrible, but felt pretty good during all of it. Total run time from the start of the cold was 10 days, some worse than others. I could have given in and gone to the doctor for an antibiotic. But who knows if that would have even helped, and I am pretty darn confident in my doTERRA oils.
I felt great for the next 5 days, then wham. Strep? Oh you gotta be kidding me. The kids have all gone back to school. I have so much to write... I hate strep. I don't get it often, but when I do, it nearly takes me out. Okay, technically, I can't verify it was indeed strep. I didn't visit a doctor. But sore throat, swollen glands, white spots, headache, neck ache, back ache, ear ache, and fever mixed with chills are all the symptoms. If it looks like, feels like and tastes like strep, I am guessing it is strep!
What to do? (In no particular order)
- Shake fists and get real mad.
- Stock the freezer with ice cream, of course.
- Drink water like...water, then drink more.
- Lay down and watch Dr. Who ("Fantastic!") and Sherlock Holmes... "obviously!"
- Use generous amounts of doTERRA oregano, On Guard, lemon, and peppermint oils.
- Be brave!
- Cry a little (if this is hard for you, get some oregano in your eye, that will help)
- Allow the body to heal
It started Monday. Today is Wednesday. I am on the mend and feeling groovy! I didn't even have to drag my miserable self to a waiting room and risk another infection and use an antibiotic to harm my gut. Oh yea, and pennies vs. dollars to get fixed up. Another essential oils success! This body we have is awesome. And so is our ability to listen to it. I am reminded of that whenever I am sick.
I sure am having fun discovering what essential oils, sleep, water, a nutrient rich diet, and a positive attitude can do for me and my family. Just what Dr. Mom ordered.
Most of the oils discussed in this post are included in the family physician's kit. On sale for my readers! Don't miss out on this great deal.
